People tend to think that curries are very hot and spicy but that’s not always so unless you want them to be of course! You can have very mild spices in curries that are super packed with flavour rather than heat and gives our dishes such delicious taste. It all depends on what you want; if you want mild, medium or hot all you have to do is ask our friendly front of house team and they will let our clever and experienced chefs know.
Butter chicken is one of our best sellers because it has a lovely, creamy but also tomato based flavour. It’s a firm kiwi favourite and goes down well with a lovely ice cold Tiger Beer which is an Indian beer or you might prefer a glass of New Zealand Pinot Gris to pair with it. Another popular creamier type dish is a korma dish whether it’s vegetarian, vegan or a meat based dish. Almond milk is one of the ingredients in korma and it’s a really delicate and delicious flavour that people new to curries are sure to love.
A tandoor is an extremely hot clay oven that we use to cook certain meats and it adds an incredibly smoky type flavour to the food. We also cook our naan breads in there which is similar to an italian pizza oven and they come out absolutely perfect; nice and fluffy with a touch of char in places which just adds to the delicious flavour.
We have our mixed platter for two which includes meats and vegetarian options and our vegetarian platter for two. If you’re vegan we can easily make up a platter for you too so just ask us and we’re happy to deliver.
We do so rest assured when we say there’s something for everyone there really is. Some of the kids who have come in over the years we’ve seen grow up and now enjoy a regular delicious curry with us which we love.
Q & A with the Team at Own Masala
Meet some of our amazing team! We’re so proud of everyone who works here because of their passion for great food and friendly, helpful service so come and find our more about our great people at Own Masala:
There’s a couple of dishes that I think are my favourite though they’re all delicious to me!
The first one is the probably chicken jalfrezi because of the smoky flavour of the tandoor
chicken and the tomato based sauce with all the spices too that just takes it to the next level.
Eaten with a fresh chapati we don’t think you can go wrong with this dish.
The second one that I love is aloo gobi. The waxy, creamy potatoes combined with sweet
cauliflower surrounded by a delicious curry sauce just ticks all the boxes. This dish isn’t a
favourite with our vegetarian and vegan guests for nothing. What goes well with an aloo gobi? If
you’re asking for a drink recommendation then Tiger Beer from India is a top pick but if you’re
thinking of another dish; then definitely crispy, tasty onion bhajis.
There’s so many amazing spices to choose from but maybe the one that has tonnes of flavour and versatility is garam masala. It’s a beautiful spice blend of cinnamon, peppercorns, coriander seeds, cumin seeds and more and it has so many layers of flavours that packs a subtle but delicious punch
My favourite place in NZ has to be Tauranga! We love calling Tauranga home and our family just loves the laid back lifestyle here. Whether it’s playing at the beach with the kids or just chilling at home; there’s no place better than here
